Until recently I never really thought to “classify” my art. Though I find it hard to park my work under any one label because I believe a true artists is never done growing, evolving. I am often asked for my “artist’s statement”. So here it is...
Because I am my biggest fan as well as my biggest critic; I like to tell myself I am a versatile and creative surreal landscape artist with a sprinkle of fantasy. A mouthful but it sure sounds pretty to me. Some would add contemporary but I shy away from that label because I’d like to think my art is timeless. Your heart might take it to the past or maybe to the future.
Surrealism is “a movement stating that the liberation of our mind, and subsequently the liberation of the individual self, can be achieved by exercising the imagination faculties of the “unconscious mind” to the attainment of a dream-like state different from, or ultimately truer than, everyday reality.” Landscape paintings are “a portrayal of scenes found in the natural world.”
The natural beauty of the world has always been an important part of my work. But even the most literal of my paintings have a surreal aspect to them; caused, at least in part, by an exceptionally vivid color palette. My landscapes are improbable, yet imaginable views of the world.
My art is not about reproducing accurately what the eye sees. I am only interested in creating images which reflect my subjective response to places, express my feelings and try to capture the mood of being there. I much prefer to move beyond the safe comfort zone. Searching for variety, I thrive on the excitement of discovery and I love experimenting with future possibilities. I aim for integrity, mood, tone, color, texture, rhythm, harmony, contrast, and peaceful balance. When I paint I create a mood, arouse a feeling, stir the emotions.
All my paintings are a creation of my imagination. It should have an instant impact on the viewer. It either moves you or it doesn’t. It’s what the heart sees through your eyes. And I am very comfortable with that. For me as an artist the real achievement is when people tell me that my art work speak to them, when my creations touch their hearts and spirit. If my paintings help push away the sweat and tears that life brings I have reached my ultimate goal.
